WWII German Heer Helmet
A nice toned WW2 German helmet. The decal has acquired a gold tone to it — a natural ageing process that occurs when the original paint oxidises over decades, shifting the decal's colour from its original silver-grey toward a warm amber or gold. Collectors refer to this as 'toning' and it is considered a desirable sign of age and authenticity.
Toned decals are one of the key indicators that a helmet has not been repainted or restored — the toning process takes decades and cannot be convincingly faked. A helmet with naturally toned decals is a helmet that has been sitting undisturbed since the war.
This M42 is a solid Heer example with the characteristic toned eagle decal that gives it its particular character. The M42 was the simplified late-war production helmet, with a rolled brim edge replaced by a raw stamped edge to speed manufacture.
