WWII German M42 Heer Helmet

Personal collection — not for sale

A salty late war army helmet. The M42 was Germany's simplified late-war production helmet — the rolled brim edge of the M35 and M40 was replaced with a raw stamped edge to speed manufacture as the war ground on and production demands intensified.

This example shows the heavy wear typical of late-war pieces: paint loss, surface rust, and the accumulated patina of a helmet that was issued and used under difficult conditions. 'Salty' is the collector's term for this kind of honest, unrestored field wear — and it is increasingly valued as the supply of genuine period pieces dwindles.

Late-war M42 helmets like this one are a direct record of Germany's deteriorating industrial and military situation in 1943–45 — simpler to make, harder to maintain, and worn by soldiers fighting a losing war on multiple fronts.
