M40 German Luftwaffe Helmet
Made during the middle of WW2, this Luftwaffe helmet was used by the German air force in combat. The M40 was the workhorse helmet of the Wehrmacht — introduced in 1940 with a simplified rolled rim replacing the earlier M35 flange, it was produced in enormous numbers and issued across all branches including the Luftwaffe.
The Luftwaffe eagle decal on the left side is the defining feature of this helmet. The single-decal pattern — Luftwaffe eagle on the left, no national shield on the right — was standard from the mid-war period onward as production pressures led to the elimination of the right-side decal. A helmet retaining a clear, well-adhered eagle decal is significantly harder to find than a bare shell.
This example shows honest combat use — the finish has the patina of a helmet that was actually worn in the field, not stored on a shelf. The eagle decal is present and legible, making this a complete, displayable piece.
